Emergency lighting equipment is designed to provide illumination during power outages.

Is there a NFPA code or standard that requires emergency lighting to be installed?

Yes!! NFPA 101 life Safety Code requires the installation of emergency lighting under sections 5.8 & 5.10

Is there an NFPA code or standard that requires tests and maintenance to be conducted periodically?

Yes!! NFPA 101 Life Safety Code Section 31-1.3.7 requires a 30 second test at 30 day intervals and an annual test for a 1 1/2 hour duration. NFPA 70 requires testing upon installation and periodically. Both codes require written records to be kept for inspection by the authority having jurisdiction.

Does OSHA have any authority over emergency lighting?

Yes!! Very much so.

Am I likely to have my emergency lighting inspected by the authority having jurisdiction?

Yes!! Fire marshals, Building inspectors, and OSHA inspectors can all inspect, and give out heavy fines if the units prove to be inoperable.
